Welcome to Active English

Active English is an energised approach to teaching using creative, physical and independent methods. Active English brings excitement to the most challenging of texts for your students, seamlessly scaffolding towards insightful written analysis.

Active English can provide practical and proven activities to engage even the most challenging students from all abilities and backgrounds.

Whether your department desire an active approach to KS3, KS4 or KS5 English, or you seek an objective and supportive review of your English provision, Active English can help you achieve your goals. Together, we can revitalise your teaching and improve engagement and results for your students.

What can Active English offer your school?

Active English Approaches

Using active learning approaches, I can deliver a two/ three hour or full day workshop to provide English departments with additional tools to reinvigorate their teaching styles in response to the new GCSE. I support teachers to work imaginatively with Shakespeare, texts from the literary canon, poetry and non-fiction texts and relates these activities to the new grading system.

These techniques have successfully supported extended writing and exam techniques allowing teachers to find the fun in the new curriculum.

Teachers can expect to learn: how to create a whoosh; how to explore punctuation in poetry through physical work; using Shakespeare to support preparation for creative writing, and more. Through fun, confidence and ownership, I seek to give teachers the tools to create memorable lessons for every ability of student.

Dynamic English Provision

Through close collaboration with the Head of Department, observation of the team, evaluations of schemes of learning and analysis of results, I can help your school identify areas to improve either through active approaches or employing alternative strategies. Using data, developing ways of tackling behaviour, reducing marking load; I have a wealth of experience to enable your team to excel and your students to thrive.

This service can include: meetings with the HOD and /or team; observation and feedback of teaching; data meeting; student interviews; questionnaire with analysis; feedback and recommendation report; practical approaches and resources; follow up evaluation meeting.

I was hoping to find ideas for delivering material to mid ability boys. I achieved my goal. The workshop had good delivery and methods. Really lovely activities applicable to all texts.
